Sterling Shepard

2023 Ed Block Courage Award Winner

Sherling Shepard’s journey in the world of football culminated in him being honored with the prestigious Ed Block Courage Award from the New York Giants in 2023. A second-round pick in the 2016 draft, Sterling has not only proven his prowess on the field but has also demonstrated exceptional resilience and dedication.

Having become the Giants’ longest-tenured player since 2020, Sterling’s return to the field in 2023 marked a comeback after enduring two seasons of absence due to injury. His story is a testament to perseverance, courage, and an unwavering commitment to rehabilitation, reflecting the core values embodied by the Ed Block Courage Award.

Beyond his athletic achievements, Sterling’s philanthropic endeavors are equally commendable. A steadfast supporter of the Alzheimer’s Association and American Heart Association, he honors the memory of his father, who succumbed to a heart attack during Sterling’s childhood, and his grandmother, who battled Alzheimer’s. Sterling goes above and beyond to raise awareness for these causes, showcasing his commitment through the annual My Cause My Cleats campaign.

Sterling extends his impact by hosting virtual Play 60 conversations with students across the tri-state area. His goal is to inspire young minds to be active for at least 60 minutes a day and instill healthy habits. Moreover, his involvement in Heart of Giant and Giants Foundation events, visits to PSEG Children’s Specialized Hospital in New Brunswick, NJ, and collaboration with teammate Matt Breida and Visa for a financial literacy competition underline his dedication to making a positive impact off the field.

Recognized by his teammates, Sterling’s selection for the Ed Block Courage Award is a testament to his leadership and professionalism. Enduring injuries that prematurely ended consecutive seasons, he has emerged as a consummate professional, garnering praise for his commitment throughout the rehabilitation process. Sterling embodies the values championed by the Ed Block Foundation, making his story a fitting representation of the essence of the Ed Block Courage Award.
