2021 PFATS Athletic Trainers of the Year

New York Giants - 2022 PFATS Athletic Trainers of the Year

As voted on by their peers in the Professional Football Athletic Trainers Society, the New York Football Giants have been selected as the 2022 Ed Block Athletic Training Staff of the Year. They were chosen for providing outstanding medical care to their players, their many contributions to the NFL, the Professional Football Athletic Trainers Society, the New York Football Giants and the athletic training community as a whole. Senior Vice President of Medical Services/Head Athletic Trainer, Ronnie Barnes and Assistant Head Athletic Trainer, Steve Kennelly have won this award once before during the 1999 season. Barnes is only one of two Head Athletic Trainers to have his staff receive this award multiple times.

The staff was instrumental in getting the Giants back to the playoffs for the first time since 1996. They worked with 2021 Courage Award recipient, Saquon Barkley, to return to Pro Bowl form after a serious knee injury in 2020. He would go on to lead the team and finish the season with the fourth most rushing yards (1312) in the NFL which was a key component to the team’s offense.

Members of the Giants athletic training staff have served as mentors and advisors to numerous individuals and organizations throughout the health and safety field of the National Football League. Further contributions include, but are not limited to, the National Athletic Trainers Association Research and Education Foundation, multiple facets of the Professional Football Athletic Trainers Society and a variety of NFL Health and Safety task forces. Despite all of these contributions, the number one priority for the New York Giants Athletic Training Staff remains the health and safety of each of their players.

Head Athletic Trainer & Sr. VP of Medical Services, Ronnie Barnes, has worked with the team his entire NFL career spanning since 1980. His staff includes Steve Kennelly (30th season), Leigh Weiss (16th season), Justin Maher (11th season), Mike Baum (6th season) & Phil Buzzerio (5th season).
